Boron trifluoride methanol complex is an adduct formed by boron trifluoride and methanol, and is often made into boron trifluoride methanol solution for use. Boron trifluoride is a colourless gas with an asphyxiating, irritating odour and produces white smoke in the atmosphere. Boron trifluoride is soluble in cold water and concentrated sulphuric acid and forms monohydrate or dihydrate with water. Boron trifluoride is one of the strongest Lewis acids and can combine with hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, ethers, alcohols, amines, phosphines, etc. to form adducts.
