Butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) is an antioxidant. It is a mixture of two isomers, 2-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole. The E code number is E320. It is synthesized by the reaction of p-hydroxyanisole with tert butyl alcohol (or isobutene), or 2-tert-butylhydroquinone with dimethyl sulfate. BHA is mainly used as an antioxidant and preservative in food (including animal food), food packaging, cosmetics and petroleum products.
