Application of Lead Dioxide:

It is used as analytical reagent, oxidant, mordant, battery electrode, and also for making matches, dyes, etc. Lead dioxide can be prepared by oxidizing lead oxide with molten potassium chlorate or nitrate, or by oxidizing lead sulfite with sodium hypochlorite. Lead dioxide has good conductivity similar to metal (specific resistance 4 ~ 5 × 10-5 Ω· cm), good chemical stability (resistant to most strong acids and oxidants), high hardness, wear resistance, light weight, low cost, etc., which are widely used as anode materials in the electrochemical industry.

When lead dioxide is heated, it will gradually change into a low oxidation state oxide of lead and release oxygen. Lead dioxide is an amphoteric oxide, which is more acidic than alkaline. Heat with strong alkali to form lead salt. Strong > oxidizing. Co heated with sulfuric acid to form lead sulfate, oxygen and water. It is heated with hydrochloric acid to produce lead dichloride, chlorine and water. It is mixed with sulfur, phosphorus and other combustibles to cause ignition.
